How is paper grain removed from a scanned photo in Photoshop Elements
When the scanned photo is enlarged it becomes quite apparent that there is an overlaid pattern in the photo image that seems to be the grain of the photographic paper. How can that be eliminated from the digital image obtained after the scanning process.
Some older printing papers had a very "nubbly" texture to them. I'm assuming that's what you're referring to.
The bad news is there's no way to eliminate it completely. The flat illumination of the scanner simply picks up all that texture as shadows when the copy is made.
I've been doing digital photo restorations for quite a few years now, and I've found two things that help:
1. Instead of scanning, copy the picture with a quality digital camera and macro lens. (I have some pointers here - http://www.jimsdigitaldiary.com - please see the page about "old photos.") The key concept here is to have a softer, more diffused light source than what the scanner offers.
2. The other approach is to use a texturizing filter effect AFTER all other adjustments are done. This doesn't take away that old paper texture. It just masks it with yet another texture. (Sometime it works well. Sometimes it doesn't.)
