Leather Bow
i'm making a red oak short bow?
well im 5'4 and i'm making a 5 foot plains indian style short bow. its 6 8ths of an inch thick and im planing to cut it in half, about 3 8ths. should i keep the handle 6 8ths if im cutting the handle in? (kinda shaped like this ><) or cut it 3 8ths like the rest of the bow. im planning on putting Leather on the handle.
also we have 0 growing trees here other than oak pine and maple. and u can make a bow of red oak.
You'll need to add the thickness for the handle either way....just that cutting the entire thing down and then adding a grip after you tiller it is far easier than trying to tiller a bow with a grip already there.
Cut the entire thing one thickness, shape and tiller it, and then add your grip. It's the easiest way.
To the other guy....you can make a bow exactly as he said from *any* wood. You picking two you heard of off the web and saying that is about as knowledgeable as half the other "experts" we have on this forum. Too danged many folks think they can read a page on the web for five minutes and then be an "expert". It doesn't work that way. 99.999% of the world's bows throughout history were made exactly as he said.
