Question about Sap wood/Core Wood?
For woodshop my end of the year project gets to be anything i want and something creative and original will get a better score. Most kinds were satisfied with a B and just decided on a chair or something everyone makes. Being a hunter/archer that shoots a longbow and a compound bow, ive always been interested in constructing my own longbow. After looking at multiple plans i found one that i clearly understood and it looked good. The only thing i don't understand is it said my stave should be made of a sapwood/Core wood combination. Is this simply a type of wood such as yew (which i intend to make it out of) or is this a special part of the tree my wood must come from? I had no idea what either of the woods were and google didn't help much so if someone understands what this means please explain, thank you.

This is your lucky day. I have been a cabinet maker for twenty seven years! The answer to your question is that sapwood is the part of the tree between the inner bark and the heart of the tree. This wood is more pliable and less prone to breaking or splitting. Core wood is from the heart of the tree. These two laminated together will give flexibility and strength.
You can use yew for a longbow, but you can also use ash or elm. Another great wood to make a longbow from is willow, but it is often hard to find.
