Is there a term for archery where you rely on feel, without using a sight?
I noticed a lot of archers use sights. I wonder if there's a style or formal name of just shooting using old fashion feel and eyes on the target.
Instinctive is one style of shooting without a sight. The general classification of bows with no sight is barebow. In competitions however barebows are limited to recurves/longbows with no sights. While at the same time wooden longbows and recurves can also fall into the traditional division, to set them apart from metal recurves shooting carbon arrows with no sights.
There are two main ways to shoot without sights, pure instinctive or point of aim. Point of aim relies on using the tip of the arrow as a reference point, usually accompanied by stringwalking where you move your draw hand down on the string a distance away from the nock of the arrow depending on distance. The closer the distance to the target the lower the hand moves on the string. Instinctive shooting on the other hand relies entirely on feel, much the same way a basketball player shoots the ball.
