Traveling to hawaii (maui) on a shoe string budget..tips for places to stay?
The Banana Bungalow youth hostel should be on your list, especially if you're not renting a car while you're staying there (parking is an issue). It's very social, lots of young people, especially Europeans, staying there, and they have free tours every day.
For a quiet break from that social scene, consider a kitschy little place that used to be a oceanfront apartment complex in Lahaina: the Makai Inn. You are almost guaranteed to have a hula girl lamp in your room, but you'll have a kitchen and the sound of the waves in your room as well. And then there's the YMCA at Keanae, about halfway down the road to Hana. There are lovely spots to pitch a tent you're probably not going to bring, but there are indoor bunks as well.
And upcountry, a little B&B called Peace of Maui is quite affordable, if you don't mind the bathroom down the hall.
I used to travel to Maui often for business and play, until I finally just moved here!
