What would happen if I drilled a small hole in a cathode ray tube television screen?
I know basically what's going on inside the picture tube: the vacuum tube is shooting electrons at the phosphor-coated screen. I also know that when you disconnect the high-voltage plug at the top of the tube, the electron beam loses its focus. So I was wondering if I could drill a small hole in the screen to make a home-made electron gun for science experiments? What worries me is a sticker on the tube that says "implosion protection". What does that mean?
Implosion means exploding inward. The tube will probably implode if you drill a hole in it because it contains a vacuum and is therefore under heavy pressure from the atmosphere. The only thing supporting the tube against that pressure is the strength of the walls. When you drill the hole you weaken the walls and they collapse under the pressure of the atmosphere.
Even if the tube didn't implode it probably wouldn't work well as an electron gun because the tube would now be full of air. The molecules in the air would scatter the electrons and prevent them from going very far.
