Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake???
Is this game vital to the MGS series story line? What are the specific games that I need to play to get the MGS story line understood?
The Primary Metal Gear storyline comprises of Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid 1,2,3,4 and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (MPO).
The current timeline is MGS3, MPO, MG, MG2, MGS, MGS2, MGS4, however you don't need to play the games in that order.
Although Portable Ops isn't really vital, the game shows where Big Boss got the idea, name and funding for his revolution and it also includes some details about the soon to be created Patriots. It also includes some characters from MGS3 so you sort of learn the fate of some characters (such as were they ever seen again, or did they die).
The same can be said about Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel, as it's basically just a comic book MGS1 but it includes some details not seen in the game like Campbell getting Snake to help.
As for Metal Gear 2 being vital, I would say so. Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake is the direct prequel to Metal Gear Solid. It includes the final fate of Big Boss, what happened to Gray Fox before becoming the Cyborg Ninja, Introduces Master Miller and Colonel Campbell.
